Vineyard

The vineyards are situated on the steep slopes of the Sil River, with an impressive 85º gradient, making them some of the most precipitous vineyards in the world. This unique positioning, coupled with the exceptional microclimate of the area, allows for the cultivation of almost extinct native grape varieties. The soil composition, consisting of gneiss, quartz, and slate, imparts a distinctive minerality to the wine.

Viticulture Practices

The viticulture practices at Adega Algueira are defined by the term "heroic viticulture," referring to the labor-intensive methods required to manage the steep slopes. The vineyards are terraced to optimize sun exposure and drainage, and all cultivation is performed manually. Access to the vines is either by boat via the river or through rugged mountain paths, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by the vineyard workers. Harvesting is done at the precise moment of optimal ripeness to ensure a balanced wine.

Winemaking Process

Once harvested, the winemaking process begins in a small Romanesque building equipped with modern technology. Fermentation is spontaneous, occurring at a controlled temperature of 13°C in stainless steel tanks to preserve the wine's regional character. The wine is then aged on lees for six months in stainless steel tanks, a process that enhances its texture and complexity. Before bottling, the wine undergoes clarification and stabilization to ensure clarity and stability.
