The Ayala family have been producing wine in the town of Briñas (La Rioja Alta) since the 18th Century. Nowadays, the winery is run with the active participation of two generations of Ayalas, leaded by Gonzalo, who has over 40 years of experience in producing wines and Ramón, who has been also working at the Haro Oenological Center. Together they own 75 acres of land scattered through Rioja Alta (in the municipalities of Briñas, Haro and Rodezno) and Rioja Alavesa (Labastida), planted with Tempranillo, Garnacha, Viura, Mazuelo and Graciano. The farming practices aim to use just the minimum amount of treatments possible. In the cellar, they keep traditional techniques like whole cluster fermentations and foot-treading the grapes. Their brand “Viña Santurnia” includes all the wines made with the traditional Rioja aging levels, while “Deóbriga” is a compilation of wines made in a more modern way.
